Know the Civil Defence warning signal - Emergency Mobile Alerts are messages about emergencies. Authorised emergency agencies send them to capable mobile phones. The alerts keep people safe and are broadcast to all capable phones from targeted cell towers.
The alerts are targeted to areas affected by serious hazards. They will only be sent when there is a serious threat to life, health or property, and, in some cases, for test purposes.

FLOOD
Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water.
Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.
Stay out of flood water!
Never try to walk, swim or drive through flood water. Many flood fatalities are caused by people attempting to drive through water.
Always assume that flood water is contaminated with farm run-off, chemicals and sewage. Contaminated flood water can make you sick. Ensure you wash your hands, clothes and property after contact with flood waters.
If flooding is possible:
Stay informed in an emergency. Listen to the radio or follow your Civil Defence Emergency Management Group online.
Be prepared to evacuate and keep your grab bag nearby. Listen to emergency services and local Civil Defence authorities. Follow any instructions about evacuation of your area. Self-evacuate if you feel unsafe.
Move pets to a safe place and move stock to higher ground. If you have to leave, take your pets with you. If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for them.
Turn off water, electricity and gas if advised to.
Move valuable and dangerous items as high above the floor as possible. This includes electrical equipment and chemicals. Use watertight containers to store important items.
Lift curtains, rugs and bedding off the floor.
Check on your neighbours and anyone who may need your help
PANDEMIC – WORLDWIDE DISEASE OUTBREAK
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
Keep a distance of at least 2 metres between yourself and people who are not part of your household.
Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when in public.
Clean and disinfect high-touch objects and surfaces.
Stay at home as much as possible to prevent the spread of disease.
Follow the guidance of the Health line www.health.govt.nz
FIRE SAFETY
All units are fitted with smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
If evacuation is necessary, dial 111 and proceed quickly and calmly to the assembly point at the entrance of the motel on the driveway.
(See Fire Evacuation instructions on the wall in your unit.)
Check the fire emergency procedures here.
EARTHQUAKE
New Zealand is a country that is prone to earthquakes, and here in Arrowtown Central Otago, we have a fault line called the Alpine Fault Line.
This fault line has the potential to produce an earthquake well into the magnitude 7 range.
In the past 8,000 years, it has produced magnitude 8 or greater earthquakes 27 times, on average every 300 years.
We need to be ready for when this happens as we might find ourselves cut off from neighboring towns such as Queenstown, Frankton, Wanaka, and Cromwell due to the liquefaction that will happen due to the amount of schist rock we have in our surrounding hills and mountains.
If you find you are experiencing an earthquake
-
DROP Somewhere close to you, no more than a few steps away, to avoid injury from flying debris.
-
COVER Under a strong table. HOLD on to the table legs to keep it from moving away from you.
-
Away from windows that can shatter and cause injury. And from tall furniture that can fall on you. Protect your head and neck with your arms.
Do not run outside or you risk getting hit by falling bricks, glass, trees, and even live powerlines. You will experience aftershocks.
Stay Calm!
